Applications running on the QNX® Realtime Operating System can now access LONWORKS networks through a QNX driver designed to work with Echelon® Corporation's Host Application programming interface. LONWORKS, from Echelon, is a revolutionary new distributed control and networking technology that lowers the cost, while expanding the range, of a new class of control applications. Any host computer running QNX can use IEC Intelligent Technologies' PC/104 adapter to communicate with other nodes on LONWORKS networks.

Product Description

This is a QNX driver interface to the LonTalk driver. Developed on QNX 4.23 with the Watcom 10.6 compiler, it utilizes Echelon's Microprocessor Interface Program (MIP/P50). The driver comes with source code for a host application example and with three QNX-specific demo programs that demonstrate how an application can request asynchronous notification when data arrives without polling for input data.

Sample Host Application

The driver comes with source code for a host application example. Echelon supplies a sample host application with their DOS example driver code. This host application has been ported to QNX. Notes describing changes made for the QNX release are also included. In addition the sample host application demonstrates the use of select to wait on input from both the keyboard and the PC/104 adapter at the same time, without polling.

Demo Programs

Three QNX-specific demo programs are supplied with the driver to demonstrate how an application can request asynchronous notification when data arrives without polling for input data. These three programs are:

• tproxy - demonstrates use of a proxy for async notification
• tsignal - demonstrates use of a signal for async notification
• tselect - demonstrates use of select for async notification

IEC also provides Network Variable Builder™ (previously NVBUILDER)software, a user-friendly graphical approach to developing Host Application network variable tables. These tables are developed using a spreadsheet format and can be dynamically changed without recompiling. Network Variable Builder dramatically reduces the development time required to create Host Applications. Any host computer running QNX can use IEC Intelligent Technologies’ PC/104 Adapter to communicate with other nodes on LONWORKS networks.
